Winter Activities in Boston's South End
Winter is terrific here in Boston. Whether you and your family want to spend it outdoors playing in the snow or looking for indoor activities, there are many great options throughout Greater Boston. We will cover some of the top ways to spend a day in Boston, so whether you have recently moved here and are spending your first winter in the city or you are looking for some ideas for friends and family, you will be sure to find one in this list.
Go Sledding in Titus Sparrow Park
Let’s start outside. Boston wouldn’t be Boston without its many parks and, of course, hills. While most people crowd around the hill in the Boston Common to go sledding, many parks throughout Boston have decent hills if your kids want to spend time outside. Titus Sparrow Park is between Boston’s South End and the perfect place for sledding, snowball fights, and snowmen. Every year, when there is snow, you will find families from both Back Bay and South End enjoying this park together.
Where Should You Go Holiday Shopping in Boston
Boston is great for people who love shopping and walking. While many people head over to Faneuil Hall to look at their holiday tree and explore the shops in Quincy Market, one of the best places to do holiday shopping is The Snowport Village in the Seaport. While it is not in Boston’s South End, it is a short trip away and the perfect place to buy gifts and enjoy the brisk outdoor temperatures. You can also pick up your holiday tree or try curling at the Snowsport Village.
See The Tree Lighting in the Boston Common
Boston’s official Christmas tree has a unique history. In 1917, two ships collided in Halifax Harbour, leading to a disastrous explosion. Boston was one of the first to respond and send supplies and aid. Because of this act of generosity, every year, a beautiful tree is cut down and brought down to Boston for the holidays. This tradition has been ongoing for more than 100 years now as we Bostonians and Nova Scotians learn and share in this story of generosity. The tree usually arrives in late November and is lit for the entire holiday season, with an initial lighting ceremony right after Thanksgiving.
